TV Drama Textual Analysis Exam

Having marked your exam practice responses on 'The Bullet Boy", here is the main feedback for everyone:
  1. You must link your analysis back to the question on representation - always explain how the techniques creates / reinforces / supports the representation suggested
  2. Learn your terms - some of you are not mentioning the basics (establishing shots, 180 degree rule, match on action, 2 shots, over-the shoulder and shot reverse etc) let alone the expected (score, synchronous editing, diegetic sounds, parallel editing etc)
  3. You don't need to write about everything you see. You only need to make sure that the points your discuss are relevant to the question.
  4. Remember, you only have 45 minutes for your written analysis.
  5. The question is out of 50 marks: 20 for argument and analysis, 20 for use of examples, 10 for terminology. Quite simply, Point, Example, Explanation and Analysis (using correct terms).
  6. See the post below and download the 'A' grade scripts from January's exam to show how to get a higher grade in your exam
Continue to prepare for this exam by watching 5 minute clips of TV Dramas, and focus on the types of representations created (see your wonderful handout on how to identify representations).

Of course, you would have had very specific, targeted feedback if you had collected your marked practice paper from school last week! But fear not, you WILL make up for it when we start our Y13 work in June.

Good luck!

See you Monday morning in the Media Suite for a 9am start to your exam.

Examples of 'Higher' grade TVD exam analysis

OCR have published some scripts from the January 2009 exam, showing the responses of candidates for the TV Drama and Representation question.

It would be useful for you to see what a 45 minute 'A' grade response has in it!

Click on the links below. This will then open up a pdf file with the candidate's script.

The January 2009 exam clip was from 'Monarch of the Glen'.  However, you should look at the written response to see how the candidate has written about the construction of representation of age through the 4 technical areas.

Exam Practice for TVD

Absent: PF, DW, KH - This is what we did on Wed 13th May 2009.

(Please refer to your 'Representation / TVD revision sheet for help in identifying how to analyse and write about representations - I have popped this in the post for those absent)

How is race represented in the following extract (0.00 - 5.00 only)?

Refer to the 4 technical areas in explaining the construction of the representations made.
